Next generation phones and free calls

Cliff Kuang at Wired writes an article asking the question if with the diffusion of broad band, connectivity and next generation phones, will free calls be part of the rate plan (full article at http://www.wired.com/gadgets/miscellaneous/magazine/17-09/ts_burningquestion).

I think is something “circular”: what you say is reasonable, but VOIP for mobile will pass (more or less, with bigger or smaller parts) through carrier infrastructures which are those who benefit from pay – calls more than they do from flat plans.

So if having free calls included in mobile plans, leaving the real margins to VAS (Value Added Services), could be a plus, on the other side will open the infrastructure to a massive load (because people won’t close the calls if they are not paying for them or because they will make simply more calls) and related costs.
